LOCAL NEWS AGENCY IHIALA LGA โ€” HEALTH DESK

Diabetes is a growing public health concern affecting millions of families worldwide, including communities across Nigeria.

As the world prepares to mark World Diabetes Day on Saturday, 14 November 2026, the Local News Agency Ihiala LGA dedicates this weekend's Health Watch to the importance of early detection, prevention and proper management of diabetes.

The 2026 World Diabetes Day campaign, themed "Early Action on Diabetes," emphasises timely diagnosis, reducing risk and improving access to appropriate medical care.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, approximately three million Nigerian adults were estimated to be living with diabetes in 2024.

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that develops when the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar because it does not produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin effectively.

When poorly controlled, diabetes can damage the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves and blood vessels.

Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, may develop gradually without obvious symptoms.

Watch out for the following symptoms:

1. Frequent urination, especially at night. 2. Excessive thirst. 3. Unexplained weight loss. 4. Persistent tiredness or weakness. 5. Blurred vision. 6. Unusual hunger.

These symptoms do not automatically mean someone has diabetes, but they should prompt medical assessment.

Importantly, some people with type 2 diabetes experience no noticeable symptoms.

๐—ช๐—›๐—ข ๐—œ๐—ฆ ๐—”๐—ง ๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—ฆ๐—ž?

People with a family history of diabetes, excess body weight, physical inactivity, high blood pressure or a previous history of diabetes during pregnancy may face increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Age is another important risk factor.

1. Check your blood sugar: Visit a qualified healthcare professional to determine whether you need a blood glucose or HbA1c test.

2. Eat balanced meals: Include vegetables, beans and appropriate portions of whole grains. Limit sugary drinks, excess sugar and highly processed foods.

3. Stay physically active: Aim for about 30 minutes of brisk walking on five days each week, according to your health and physical ability.

4. Maintain a healthy weight: Healthy weight management can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

5. Avoid tobacco: Smoking contributes to serious long-term health risks.

6. Follow prescribed treatment: People already diagnosed with diabetes should take medications as directed, attend follow-up appointments and monitor their condition as advised.

Although type 2 diabetes can often be prevented or delayed, type 1 diabetes cannot currently be prevented through lifestyle measures.

Whether you are a trader, farmer, commercial driver, civil servant, business owner, student or community leader, your health deserves attention.

Do not wait until illness interferes with your daily activities before seeking medical advice.

Families should encourage their loved ones to undergo appropriate health checks and support those already living with diabetes without discrimination or stigma.

๐—ฅ๐—˜๐— ๐—˜๐— ๐—•๐—˜๐—ฅ: Early detection can help prevent serious complications. Knowing your blood sugar status is an important step towards protecting your health.

If someone develops vomiting, rapid or deep breathing, confusion or severe weakness alongside possible diabetes symptoms, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Your health is one of your greatest assets. Protecting it requires awareness, discipline and timely medical attention.

As World Diabetes Day approaches, let every family make a commitment to healthier living, appropriate medical screening and greater awareness of diabetes.
